General Education Core Competencies

Associate Degree and Diploma Requirements

Every associate degree at Trident Technical College is designed to promote the success of our graduates, whether in their careers or their next academic program. In support of that goal, associate degree programs include general education courses, courses specific to their degree and courses that provide training in technology appropriate to the student’s career field.

General Education Competencies

TTC’s general education core curriculum is derived from the belief that quantitative reasoning, information literacy and global citizenship are essential workplace competencies and provide the necessary foundation for lifelong learning. To foster the development of these essential competencies, the general education core curriculum provides students with a broad knowledge base and exposure to various disciplines’ perspectives and methodologies.

Quantitative Reasoning: The ability to think critically and apply basic empirical skills to interpret and solve problems that are relevant to real-world experiences.

Information Literacy: The ability to conduct valid research, synthesize findings and communicate effectively in written, spoken or visual modalities.

Global Citizenship: The ability to develop intercultural awareness of regional, national and global communities.

General Education Core Curriculum

All programs identify core courses from each of the following categories for a minimum of 15 hours of general education for an associate degree and nine hours of general education for diplomas.

Students with earned credit from other institutions or previous catalog years may request a course substitution, if applicable. Current students should discuss their transfer and career goals with their faculty advisor to determine the best course options. Faculty advisors can submit a course substitution request after consulting with the student.

College Policies

No course can count in more than one category.

Students must receive departmental approval for substitutions. Any exceptions to the academic guidelines contained in this catalog will be at the discretion of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
